2009 Human Resources Conference
More than 100 South Carolina professionals
have strengthened their business roots by attending the South
Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s 19th Annual Human Resources
Conference in Hilton Head. Attendees of the three-day event at
the Crowne Plaza Resort said the theme, “Growing HR One
Professional at a Time,” fit perfectly with the changes and
challenges right now in the HR profession.

2009 Washington Night in South Carolina
There was standing room only at the South
Carolina Chamber of Commerce's Washington Night in South
Carolina. More than 400 people gathered in Columbia April 14,
2009 for the annual meeting of South Carolina’s congressional
delegation and the state’s most influential business leaders.
The town-hall style meeting initiated thought-provoking
discussions concerning stimulus money, nuclear power,

2009 Pre-Washington Night Symposium
Before the Washington Night in South Carolina
event, the South Carolina Chamber hosted a special symposium
discussing several pertinent federal issues, including the
dangerous Employee Free Choice Act, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay
Act, immigration, wages and more.

Safety Awards Honor South Carolina Companies that make Workplace
Safety a Priority.
The Safety Awards are presented annually based
on companies achieving a commendable lost workday case rate
during the previous calendar year. This year’s Safety Awards
luncheon featured Mike Fisher, managing director of NASCAR’s
Research and Development Center, as well as more than 200
attendees who gathered March 25 to celebrate workplace safety.

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the
State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management join
together each year to honor human resources professionals in
South Carolina. This is always a wonderful evening of
recognition and culminates with the announcement of the Human
Resources Professional of the Year. |

2009 Business Speaks at the State House
More than 400 people gathered in Columbia January 14, 2009
for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce's Business Speaks at
the State House. The annual gathering of the state�s business
leaders, constitutional officers and members of the General
Assembly was a town hall-style meeting that offered a special
opportunity to hear from legislative leadership on issues that
will be addressed during the legislative session. |

Outstanding Individuals Honored at 29th Annual Summit
During the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce's 29th Annual
Summit, The Future of Business, held at Wild Dunes Resort on the
Isle of Palms November 12-14, the South Carolina Chamber honored
several individuals in front of hundreds of South Carolina's
business leaders. Harris E. DeLoach, president and chief
executive officer of Sonoco Products Company, was named the
2008 Business Leader of the Year, Senator William H. "Billy"
O'Dell was honored as the
2008 Public Servant of the Year and Representative James E.
Smith Jr. received the
2008 Sergeant William Jasper Freedom Award for his brave
service in Afghanistan.
In addition, the Annual Summit Symposium outlined key issues
the Chamber will lobby for in the upcoming 2009 legislative
session, also known as the
Competitiveness Agenda. Eleven speakers from across the
state gave snapshots of a important issues such as comprehensive
tax reform, workforce development, healthcare and energy. |

Diversity Appreciation Reception and Dinner
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the South Carolina Diversity Council held the 4th Annual Diversity Appreciation Reception and Dinner October 28 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia. Luke Visconti, partner and co-founder of DiversityInc., served as keynote speaker. Visconti has appeared on numerous national networks sharing his diversity expertise. New this year, the 2008 Excellence in Workplace Diversity Awards were divided into three categories: small, medium and large employers.
The winners are: Small Employer - U.S. Engine Value, Westminster; Medium Employer- Wackenhut Services Inc. - Savannah River Site, Aiken; and, Large Employer- VERIZON Wireless, North Charleston.

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce hosted membership and legislative receptions in four regions of the state this summer: the Midlands (Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center), the Upstate (BMW Zentrum), the Pee Dee (Osborne’s) and the Lowcountry (South Carolina Aquarium). Business Classic Golf Tournament
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce held its 28th Annual Business Classic Golf Tournament September 17 at the Windermere Club in Blythewood. Under cloudy skies and occasional sprinkles, business leaders and legislators from across the state networked and enjoyed a day of camaraderie on the beautifully landscaped links.

Manufacturers Appreciation Night
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) honored three outstanding manufacturing enterprises at the 14th Annual Manufacturers Appreciation Night. More than 200 people attended the September 30 event. Judi Gatson, anchor of WIS News 10, served as mistress of ceremonies.

Hunter Howard's Retirement Roast
More than 300 of Hunter�s closest friends
celebrated his 17 years of accomplishments as the CEO and
president of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
Laughter and tears reigned during the evening as people
told tales about Hunter�s driving habits, hair color, and
management style.
