Water Environment Consultants (WEC) is an environmental and water resources engineering firm with a mission to help our clients evaluate environmental impacts and find solutions to complex problems, especially those in the surface water environment. We are a technical resource for collaborative problem solving with our clients, particularly related to regulatory compliance, project design, water quality management, hydrology & hydraulics, and environmental impact assessment. Located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, WEC has over 22 years of experience in environmental and water resources engineering on projects in the Southeastern U.S., the Caribbean, and other locations around the world. WEC works directly with public and private clients, but we often provide specialized support to other civil and environmental consulting firms to augment the skills of existing project teams. Our primary service areas include: Regulatory Compliance and Permitting Support Our clients often need regulatory compliance and permitting assistance either for new project construction or for on-going operations. WEC specializes in NPDES permitting (industrial/ municipal discharges, storm water, general permits, etc.) and associated studies, wastewater facility process design/construction permitting, Section 404/401 permitting, and others. Industrial and municipal clients, as well as their consultants, often contract WEC for assistance to ensure their water-related permits are obtained promptly and include only those requirements that benefit the environment and the “bottom line.” Water Quality and Quantity Management Maintaining good water quality in our lakes and rivers is important for protecting aquatic life and for keeping these resources safe for future use. Water quantity is also important, whether it is too much (storm water runoff), or too little (surface water supply during drought conditions). WEC helps our clients find the best way to implement their projects while meeting regulatory and internal requirements to protect water quality and manage water quantities. In some cases, this involves identification of methods to reduce, reuse and recycle water in order to minimize environmental impacts and save money for our clients. Riverine, Estuarine and Coastal Specialized Services WEC engineers and scientists are experts in the riverine, estuarine and coastal environment. We provide a number of specialized services to support project teams from the mountains to the coast, including field monitoring of environmental conditions (water quality, tides, currents, waves, and biota), sediment transport studies in support of dredging projects, biological assessments, modeling of environmental impacts (e.g., wasteload allocations, project construction impacts, etc.), and compliance with National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) permitting. Numerical Modeling Support Given the depth of our experience with numerical modeling in the water environment, we often team with other engineering and environmental consulting firms to provide this specialty service. Modeling is a useful tool for providing defensible estimates of project environmental effects (which can be used to address regulatory concerns) and for providing estimates of extreme conditions to support project design (e.g., extreme waves, currents or storm surge levels).
